Over the past ten years, the Cessna model 180 Skywagon has appreciated in value faster than ANY other aircraft in the world. For taildragger aficionados, a combination of over 50 years of proven performance, good value, and the decision by Cessna to discontinue production of conventional gear aircraft has made the 180 and 185 series increasingly a truly collectible aircraft. They are excellent short field backwoods aircraft that can haul the weight and get it there where you just wouldn’t go with most aircraft. The 180 and 185 series have become a standing favorite with Alaskan and Canadian bushpilots with a reputation earned over a half century of rugged use.
And 2872K is very likely the finest example Skywagon in the world. To get there, we start with a low time, late model, K version - one of the last manufactured in 1979. This plane had an easy life with a handful of owners in the dry western United States and virtually always hangared. In 22 years of life, the aircraft currently has just under 2200 total hours on the airframe. In 1996, owner John Huft of Pagosa Springs, Colorado went for speed, installing a modified Teledyne IO520-F engine converted to normal carburetion with the 78-inch McCauley 3-blade “big foot” propeller along with a new set of digital engine instruments. Known to 180 aficionados as the “Texas Engine Conversion” this gave 2872K a big fan and 285 bhp at 2700 rpm. In 1999, Huft added the Snider Speed Kit, a series of fairings that dramatically decreased drag to the point that 2872K was a regular winner in class races. The engine remains under 700 hours and this Cessna, in addition to a Kenmore gross weight increase to 3190 pounds, will haul it at 144 knots true airspeed. Legend Airways purchased the plane in late 1999. The first improvement was a $35,000 upgrade to the ship’s avionics to include a Garmin stack with a GNS430 GPS/NAV/COM to compliment the existing KLN-90 GPS, a King HSI, Garmin audio panel and transponder. 2872K also features a Goodyear stormscope and Alpine CD player, making this undoubtedly the best equipped 180K in the world.
The result is an extremely low time, late model 180 with absolutely no damage history and frankly overdone interior, exterior, and avionic work to bring this plane to a level of perfection you will not likely see in this class airplane ever again. Designed to be a truly one of a kind collectible that appeals to that special individual that has to have the best. | |
